Honoring Our Heroes

This Nisswa American Legion has a great tradition to follow from Billie Brown who the Post is named after. Billie Brown, his brother, and many young men from the Brainerd Lakes area served into 194th Tank Battalion. They were the first U. S. tanks deployed on foreign soil by the United States. They were sent to the Philippines early during World War II. They were captured and brutally treated on the Bataan Death March. Billie Brown with help from his brother survived the infamous “Bataan Death March” only to die in Camp O'Donnell. His brother and several other members of the 194th Tank Battalion survived and returned home.

We honor all Veterans by planning professional Memorial Day Ceremonies each year. We are known for the quality of our services and the quality of our speakers. In the past few years we have had Honorable Governor Tim Pawlenty, 4 Star Air Force General Bruce Carlson, U S Senator Coleman, State Senator Koering, State Representative Ward, State Senator Samuelson. We also have had flyovers by F-16’s from the 148th Fighter Wing (Duluth) or C-130 from St Paul. We have great patriotic music as well.

We also honor our U. S. Flag in November when we have our flag burning ceremony .  Several classes come down to our legion and we properly dispose of torn and tattered flags. We also teach the kids about the Flag and how to properly fold the Flag.
